Five killed as military vehicle crashes into Taraba market
Five traders were killed and several others injured when a military vehicle from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wukari collided with them at Peva Market in the Takum local government area of Taraba State on Wednesday afternoon.
The military vehicle was reportedly escorting traders from Wukari to Takum to enhance security along the route, as the region has faced a rise in incidents of kidnapping and violence. Witnesses reported that the vehicle lost control and crashed into traders displaying their goods along the roadside.
Tony David, a local resident, confirmed the incident, stating that the military personnel had been deployed to protect the traders during their market activities, particularly in the troubled Chanchanji area.
According to David, five individuals died in the collision, and many others sustained injuries of varying severity. The deceased and injured were transported to Takum General Hospital for medical treatment and further procedures.
The incident has led to widespread grief among community members, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the crash. There have been unverified reports suggesting that the driver of the military vehicle may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time, but these claims have not been independently confirmed.
Peva Market is situated in Chanchanji Ward, an area that has experienced recurrent security challenges, including attacks and kidnappings.
Lieutenant Umar Mohammed, the Acting Public Relations Officer for the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Jalingo, stated he was reviewing the incident and would provide updates as soon as possible.
Additionally, ASP Victor Mshelizah, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Taraba State Command, acknowledged awareness of the event through social media. He indicated he would reach out to the Divisional Police Officer in Takum to verify casualty numbers and gather further details.
