FRSC reacts to viral video of Abuja CDB incident

Federal Road Safety Corps Addresses Viral Video Incident in Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a statement in response to public concerns regarding a viral video depicting an incident involving one of its patrol teams in the Central Business District of Abuja.

In a statement signed by Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, the FRSC described the narrative surrounding the incident as misleading. The Corps reported that the incident occurred during a routine traffic enforcement operation on April 16, 2026, conducted by its RS7.14 Central Business District Unit Command.

According to the statement, the operation involved the lawful interception of a vehicle for identifiable traffic violations, including overloading and seatbelt non-compliance. The FRSC stated that its personnel took appropriate steps to ensure compliance.

The situation escalated when the driver reportedly became non-compliant and deviated from lawful instructions, prompting a significant public response that heightened tension in the area. A crowd formed, raising security concerns and the potential for disorder.

The Corps emphasized that at no point did its personnel assault, threaten, or use force against the driver or any occupants of the vehicle. The individual seen in the viral video wielding an iron rod is described as a bystander, not affiliated with the driver or the FRSC.

“FRSC personnel on the scene exhibited professionalism, restraint, and emotional intelligence,” the statement said. It noted that the decision to disengage and de-escalate the situation was made to ensure public safety, especially given the volatile crowd dynamics.

The Corps further clarified that this decision should not be misunderstood as a lack of enforcement or compromise of standards. Instead, it represents a strategic approach to prevent escalation, protect lives, and maintain public order.

To conclude, the FRSC reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer roads while upholding professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights. The Corps urged the public to disregard misleading narratives and to cooperate with law enforcement in the execution of their lawful duties.

This clarification follows accusations that FRSC officials engaged in harassment of citizens, including an allegation that a Corps official struck a man with an iron rod during the confrontation.
