APC Achieves Major Wins in By-Elections Across Four States; PDP Retains Rivers Seat
The All Progressives Congress (APC) secured significant victories in four states during Saturday’s by-elections, successfully capturing key senatorial, House of Representatives, and state assembly seats in Ondo, Nasarawa, Kano, and Kebbi. Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) maintained its hold on the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported the results on Sunday, indicating that the APC has solidified its electoral strength as the nation heads toward the 2027 general elections.
Ondo State Results
In Ondo State, Prof. Dayo Faduyile, a former National President of the Nigerian Medical Association, won the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election with 68,474 votes. The Returning Officer, Prof. Gbenga Solomon-Ibileye, announced that Faduyile defeated Adeolu Akinwunmi of the Allied People’s Movement, who received 1,411 votes. Other candidates included Adesanya Olaoluwa of the Action People’s Party, who garnered 213 votes, and Clement Funso-Nejo of the Boot Party, who polled 70 votes.
A total of 70,770 votes were cast in the election, with 602 rejected. This election was necessitated by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim’s appointment as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Dr. Mutiu Agboke, the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, characterized the election as a “testing ground” for future contests, emphasizing the importance of lessons learned for improving electoral processes.
Rivers State Results
In Rivers State, the PDP retained the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat. Former Senator Olaka Nwogu emerged victorious with 47,961 votes. Returning Officer Rosemary Ogu confirmed that Nwogu defeated Douglas Fabeke of the Action Alliance, who received 1,175 votes, and Osarosaka Ebenezer of the APC, who secured 1,647 votes. Nwogu’s victory fills the vacancy left by the late Senator Barinada Mpigi, who passed away in February.
Nasarawa State Results
In Nasarawa State, APC candidate Barrister Danladi Halilu Envulu-Anza won the Nasarawa North Senatorial by-election with 45,362 votes. Returning Officer Prof. Aminu Ali reported that Envulu-Anza outperformed Labour Party candidate Labaran Maku, who garnered 12,931 votes, and PDP candidate Emmanuel David Ombugadu, who received 11,331 votes. Some political parties have expressed intentions to contest the results.
Kano State Results
The APC also won the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat in Kano State, where Rabiu Shuaibu secured 35,356 votes. Returning Officer Umar Sani announced that Shuaibu defeated Lawal Garba-Haruna of the Allied People’s Movement and Labour Party candidate Abubakar Yahaya-Muhammad, who received 268 and 98 votes, respectively.
The by-election was prompted by the death of Muhammad Danjuma-Hassan, a former member of the House of Representatives.
Kebbi State Results
In Kebbi State, APC candidate Rabiu Garba Aiki triumphed in the Zuru State Constituency by-election for the state assembly, winning with 4,871 votes against Labour Party candidate Aliyu Galadima Muhammad, who scored 168 votes. According to INEC data, there were 109,385 registered voters in the constituency, with 5,156 accredited for the election.
These results highlight the APC’s growing influence in several states, while the PDP maintains its position in Rivers. The outcomes could provide insights into party dynamics and voter sentiment as the country approaches the 2027 elections.
