Students Protest at Federal University of Technology, Minna, After Alleged Killing

MMinna, Nigeria – Students at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, shut down the campus and blocked the Minna-Bida Road on Tuesday in response to the alleged killing of a fellow student by suspected robbers. The protest was also fueled by a series of recent attacks on off-campus residents.

The demonstration disrupted academic activities as students barricaded the university’s main gate, preventing access for staff and faculty members, including principal officers and lecturers.

According to sources, the protest was sparked by the death of a student during a robbery that occurred three days prior. Another attack on Monday night reportedly left several students injured.

Protesters expressed concerns over what they perceive as inadequate security measures from university authorities, especially considering the N10,000 security levy collected from students each academic session.

As a result of the demonstration, the university’s scheduled computer-based aptitude test for 100- and 300-level students was postponed, causing further disruption to academic operations.

In response to the unrest, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Lydia Legbo, stated that management is in discussions with relevant stakeholders to restore peace and enhance security for students living off-campus. She assured that measures are being implemented to address the prevailing security challenges in these communities.
