Glasgow 2026: Nworgu clinches Nigeria’s first Gold in record-breaking style

Nigerian Athlete Sets Record at Commonwealth Games
GLASGOW, Scotland — Esther Nworgu of Nigeria established a new Games record Sunday by lifting 119.0 kilograms in the women’s para powerlifting lightweight event. This achievement marked Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Fellow Nigerian athlete Esther Onyema secured the silver medal with a lift of 115.5 kilograms. England’s Olivia Broome took home the bronze after lifting 106.6 kilograms. Kenya’s Hellen Wawira Kariuki, England’s Charlotte McGuinness, and India’s Suman Devi finished in fourth, fifth, and sixth places, respectively.
Earlier in the day, Roland Ezuruike earned Nigeria’s first medal of the games, claiming silver in the men’s lightweight event.
With these results, Team Nigeria has garnered three medals on the opening day, consisting of one gold and two silver.
