Gov Namadi threatens action against Jigawa’s absentee local government chairmen
JIGAWA STATE, Nigeria — Governor Umar Namadi has issued a stern warning to local government chairpersons regarding absenteeism, indicating that the government will take decisive action against those who fail to remain present in their offices.
The governor’s warning came after his surprise visits to various local government secretariats revealed that several chairpersons and senior officials were not at their posts. Governor Namadi expressed his disappointment during a press briefing, emphasizing the essential role local government leaders play in serving their constituents.
“Local government councils are the closest government to the grassroots,” he stated. “The chairpersons must be present and attentive to the needs of the people to ensure effective administration.”
As part of his response, Governor Namadi announced plans to convene a meeting with all 27 local government chairpersons to address the issue of absenteeism and excessive travel. He underscored that the state government would not tolerate what he termed undemocratic behavior, warning that appropriate measures would be taken against any chairperson who neglects their duties.
The governor recalled that he had previously cautioned the chairpersons during their swearing-in ceremony in 2025 about the importance of being present and actively managing their councils from within the secretariat.
