Dani Olmo Responds to Roberto Ayala After World Cup Final Altercation
Spain midfielder Dani Olmo has addressed remarks made by Argentina’s assistant coach, Roberto Ayala, following a confrontation during the 2026 World Cup final.
Ayala claimed that he only shoved Olmo during their altercation, a statement that Olmo vehemently disputes. In an interview with Diari de Terrassa, Olmo accused Ayala of dishonesty, asserting that an apology is meaningless when one refuses to acknowledge wrongdoing. He stated, “An individual who claims to be sorry but justifies a punch as a reaction to a comment is certainly not sincere in their apology.”
Olmo emphasized that he did not provoke Ayala, saying, “There is no need for him to apologize.” He added, “What truly characterizes us is not the error itself, but the bravery to admit it with humility, honesty, and dignity, especially when my children, my family, and all the fans are watching the game.”
The confrontation between Olmo and Ayala was one of several incidents following the final match, in which Ferran Torres scored the only goal in the 106th minute to secure Spain’s victory. Reports indicate that Ayala made contact with Olmo’s neck during the exchange.
As a result of various post-match incidents, FIFA has launched an investigation, with potential penalties and fines for those found guilty of misconduct.
