Tinubu: ‘I Took Over From Myself’

By Johnbosco Agbakwuru, ABUJA

President Bola Tinubu stated on Tuesday that he is not focused on the economic conditions he inherited upon taking office, emphasizing that he views his relationship with former President Muhammadu Buhari as a partnership.

Addressing the Renewed Hope Ambassadors—a group formed to promote his administration’s agenda—Tinubu remarked that he essentially “took over from himself.”

“I’ve listened to you. There is the economy. I didn’t have to look back because the truth is, I took over from myself,” Tinubu said. “The late Buhari is me; he was a partner. If I took over from him, is that not from myself?”

Tinubu acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead but assured the group of his commitment to address issues responsibly. “If something is wrong, fine, live with it, correct it, move on. The life voyage is not going to be easy, and so many of you are traveling with me. I can only stand before you and say you will not regret it,” he said.

He encouraged the ambassadors to inspire hope among the populace. “That’s why we ask you to renew their hope. If they don’t want to, we will let them see the hope and the roads with the bridges and the children we raise, and the economy we are growing,” he added.

In his remarks, Tinubu reaffirmed that the Renewed Hope Ambassadors are integral to a movement aimed at eradicating poverty and ignorance in Nigeria. “You are in good company. That’s all I can say, and all I can promise is that I won’t give up,” he stated.

On the subject of opposition parties, Tinubu urged them to adhere to democratic principles and respect judicial authority. He issued a challenge to political adversaries, specifically targeting the African Democratic Congress, and asserted that he remains undeterred by any conspiracies against him.

He referenced the alleged shortcomings of opposition leaders in their previous roles, specifically mentioning privatization efforts during their tenures. “Once they privatized Ajaokuta, is it working today?” he questioned. “Your job is done. Just let’s go to the depths, the research of the details and what we promised Nigerians, and I promise I won’t let you down.”
