‘Igbo leaders should caution him’ – Okai reacts to Orji Kalu’s stance on xenophobic attack

Igbo Leaders Urged to Address Senator Kalu’s Remarks on Xenophobic Attacks

Austin Okai, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called for Igbo leaders to intervene following comments made by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu regarding the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

During discussions in the Senate about the violence affecting Nigerians in South Africa, Kalu cautioned against jeopardizing the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and South Africa. While other senators expressed concerns about potential retaliation against South African businesses should the attacks persist, Kalu emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic ties.

Kalu further criticized some senators for their expressions of outrage, suggesting they were motivated by a desire for media exposure.

In response, Okai took to Facebook to question Kalu’s stance, pointing out that his community is among those hardest hit by the violence. “Why is Orji Kalu acting this way? His own people are the primary victims of these barbaric attacks in South Africa, yet he seems blinded by selfish interests,” Okai wrote. He expressed disappointment in Kalu’s approach and called for more responsible leadership within the Igbo community.

“I have far more respect for the likes of Senator Ningi, Oshiomhole, and others. Kalu really failed here,” Okai added. He noted that he had raised concerns about the issue on television two weeks earlier and was pleased to see it gaining attention.
