Imo State Police Launches Search for Kidnapped University Student

OWERRI, Nigeria — The Imo State Police Command has initiated a coordinated search and rescue operation following the abduction of a 17-year-old student from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma, a first-year microbiology student, was reportedly kidnapped along the FUTO/Ihiagwa Road in Owerri West Local Government Area.

Authorities have mobilized a team consisting of police officers and local vigilantes to the area, where immediate searches of the surrounding bushes and neighborhoods have commenced.

Police spokesperson Henry Okoye issued a statement on Tuesday, noting that State Police Commissioner Audu Garba Bosso has assigned the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to lead the investigation. The commissioner emphasized the importance of conducting intelligence-led operations in collaboration with other security agencies.

“The directives are part of proactive measures aimed at ensuring the safe rescue of the victim and the swift apprehension of the offenders,” Okoye said.

In response to the situation, the commissioner has also enhanced security measures across the FUTO vicinity and neighboring communities. Continuous patrols, surveillance, and visibility policing are being implemented.

Okoye reassured students, school officials, and local residents of the police command’s commitment to their safety. He urged the community to remain calm and vigilant while continuing their daily activities.

“The Imo State Police Command remains proactive and resolute in its mandate to prevent crime and protect lives and property,” he added.
