India Defeats Bangladesh by Five Wickets in Women’s T20 World Cup

MANCHESTER, England — India secured a crucial victory against Bangladesh, winning by five wickets in their Women’s T20 World Cup match at Old Trafford on Thursday. This win bolstered India’s chances of advancing to the semifinals.

Chasing a target of 137 runs, opener Shafali Verma led the innings with a quickfire 53 off 34 deliveries, helping India reach their goal in just 17 overs.

In other action, South Africa triumphed over the Netherlands by a commanding margin of 88 runs, propelled by Tazmin Brits, who scored a maiden T20 international century.

As a result, India and South Africa find themselves in a competitive race for the second semifinal spot from Group A, behind the unbeaten Australian team. Both nations have accumulated six points, trailing Australia by two points and sitting two ahead of Bangladesh, who maintain slim hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages. Bangladesh’s last pool match is against South Africa at Lord’s on Sunday.

India’s prospects hinge not only on their performance but also on a challenging upcoming match against Australia, also scheduled at Lord’s. While India boasts a superior net run rate, they will need to enhance their fielding after dropping four catches in the matchup against Bangladesh. Although Bangladesh struggled to take advantage of these errors, they could only muster 136 runs for eight wickets.

India’s bowling attack was spearheaded by spinners Radha Yadav, who took 3 wickets for 28 runs, and Shree Charani, with two wickets for 21 runs.

In South Africa’s match, a strong partnership between Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt, who scored 45, laid the foundation with an opening stand of 121 runs. Brits dominated the Dutch bowlers, finishing her innings unbeaten on 114 runs from 69 deliveries, including 15 fours and three sixes. Annerie Dercksen contributed an aggressive 37 runs from just 16 balls, leading South Africa to a total of 208 for one.

The Netherlands began their innings positively, with openers Phebe Molkenboer and Sanya Khurana adding 58 runs before their dismissals. Sterre Kalis also contributed 26 runs but the innings collapsed after her departure. Medium-pacer Ayabonga Khaka was the standout bowler for South Africa, claiming three wickets for 19 runs, while Chloe Tryon supported with two wickets for 16 runs.
