Japanese Baseball Legend Isao Harimoto Dies at 86
Isao Harimoto, a revered figure in Japanese baseball and the first player from Japan to achieve 3,000 career hits, passed away at the age of 86, according to reports.
Born to Korean parents in Japan, Harimoto overcame significant adversity, learning to bat left-handed after a childhood accident severely limited the mobility of his right hand. At the age of five, he survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima when his mother shielded him and his sister from the blast.
Throughout his illustrious career, Harimoto accumulated a record 3,085 hits, a milestone that remains unparalleled in Nippon Professional Baseball. He enjoyed a successful tenure with several teams, most notably the Yomiuri Giants, earning the nickname “Hit Machine” for his exceptional hitting skills.
Harimoto concluded his professional baseball career in 1981 after 23 seasons. Following his retirement, he transitioned to a career as a television commentator.
In recognition of his impact on the sport, he was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.
