Kano State Fire Service Reports 58 Fire Incidents and 13 Fatalities in May
KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Fire Service recorded 58 fire incidents and 13 fatalities during the month of May 2026, according to a statement released by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, on Monday.
In a summary of the agency’s operational activities, Director Alhaji Sani Anas noted that the service responded to a total of 80 emergency calls between May 1 and May 31. These calls included fire outbreaks, rescue operations, and false alarms.
Anas detailed that of the total calls received, 58 were classified as fire incidents, 15 involved rescue operations, and seven were identified as false alarms.
The 13 fatalities encompassed various incidents, including fire accidents, road collisions, and cases related to ponds and wells. Despite these losses, Anas emphasized the service’s success in saving lives, reporting that 34 individuals were rescued during operations throughout the state.
The statement also indicated significant economic impacts from the fire incidents, with estimated property losses exceeding ₦144 million. However, timely firefighting interventions reportedly prevented losses of approximately ₦437 million in potential damage.
Anas urged residents to prioritize fire safety and exercise caution during fire-related activities to mitigate future incidents. He called for the public to adopt effective fire safety measures to prevent avoidable disasters.
He reassured the community of the fire service’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through prompt responses, heightened public awareness, and ongoing preventive measures.
