Kano government seals illegal structure at Kwari market

Kano State Government Closes Illegal Construction at Kwari Market

Kano, Nigeria – The Kano State Government has taken action against a building under construction at Kwari Market, sealing the site over allegations of illegal development. The enforcement was carried out on Sunday by a committee led by Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, the Director-General of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS).

The move comes after reports indicated that the structure was being erected without the required approvals. During an inspection of the site, Sani emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing unauthorized construction that obstructs access roads and poses safety hazards.

“You cannot just wake up because you have money or resources and block access roads meant for the public,” Sani stated.

Kwari Market is a significant hub for textile trade, and Sani noted the need for organized and modern development rather than the intrusion of unauthorized buildings. He highlighted that many illegal structures are built at night to evade detection.

“This is why we have to act. These illegal structures can cause serious problems like flooding or hinder emergency services, especially during fire outbreaks,” he said.

Sani issued a warning against continuing such practices, not only in Kwari Market but throughout Kano State. “We are not going to sleep on this. Anyone involved in illegal construction should stop, because the consequences will not be good,” he stated.

Developers are reminded to adhere to regulations by obtaining proper permits before initiating any construction project. “You cannot just get land from anywhere and start building without documents or approval. We will investigate and take lawful action against anyone involved,” said Sani.

The committee confirmed that the sealed structure is slated for demolition as part of ongoing efforts to restore order and ensure public safety in the market.
