The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos has officially endorsed Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as the consensus candidate for the upcoming governorship primaries ahead of the 2027 election.
As the highest decision-making body within the APC in Lagos, the GAC’s support marks a significant step in Hamzat’s political journey. On Monday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his backing for Hamzat’s candidacy to succeed him as governor.
The endorsement was publicly announced on Tuesday following a closed-door strategic meeting at Lagos House in Marina, led by Governor Sanwo-Olu and GAC leader Prince Tajudeen Olusi. During the meeting, the GAC also resolved to purchase the governorship nomination form for Dr. Hamzat at a cost of N50 million, reflecting their solid support for his campaign.
Despite the consensus, the council emphasized that the party will still proceed with primaries for all positions, ensuring adherence to party guidelines and a fair process for all aspirants.
Twenty-three out of the 34 GAC members attended the meeting, including notable figures such as Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, and Cardinal James Odunmbaku.
Earlier on Monday, Governor Sanwo-Olu and members of the Executive Council received Hamzat and the GAC in a consultation visit after the State Executive Council meeting. The governor expressed a shared emotional moment with his deputy, reminiscing about their political alliance over the past seven years and the influence of former Governor Bola Tinubu in their careers. Sanwo-Olu noted that during their time in ex-Governor Babatunde Fashola’s cabinet, they collaborated closely on numerous decisions, underscoring their longstanding partnership in public service.
