Lagos: One dead, four injured in Third Mainland Bridge crash

Fatal Accident on Third Mainland Bridge Claims One Life, Injures Four

LAGOS — A woman has died, and four others sustained serious injuries following a collision between two Toyota Sienna vehicles on the Third Mainland Bridge early Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred near the Iyana-Iworo area and involved two commercial vehicles fully loaded with passengers.

Olawale Afolabi, Head of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident, stating that the injured were quickly transported to a nearby trauma center for medical treatment.

Preliminary investigations suggest that reckless driving by one of the vehicles contributed to the head-on collision. LASEMA’s Tiger Squad was activated at approximately 7:26 a.m. and arrived at the scene by 8:00 a.m. to manage rescue and recovery efforts.

Afolabi noted that emergency responders worked in conjunction with police officers and officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to secure the area, facilitate traffic flow, and remove debris from the roadway.

Citing comments from LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Afolabi characterized the incident as avoidable, urging motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations. He emphasized the need for caution on major highways, warning against speeding and unsafe overtaking. Additionally, he advised drivers to maintain lane discipline and cooperate with traffic officials.
