Lagos Environmental Agency Seals Six Companies for Violations
The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has sealed six iron and steel manufacturing companies in the Odogunyan Industrial Layout, Ikorodu, due to alleged environmental violations. This action is part of LASEPA’s efforts to enforce compliance with environmental regulations in the state.
The enforcement initiative, carried out by the agency’s Enforcement Team, followed directives from the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. LASEPA stated that this operation exemplifies the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring adherence to environmental laws.
The companies affected by this action are Germini Steel Nigeria Limited, Top Steel Nigeria Limited, Pulkit Alloy Nigeria Limited, Landcraft Steel Nigeria Limited, Sunflag Steel Nigeria Limited, and African Steel Nigeria Limited. Inspectors identified several environmental infractions during site visits.
LASEPA reported that violations included the emission of various types of particulate matter, such as brown dust, black dust, and non-metallic substances, which pose risks to air quality and public health.
During the enforcement exercise, LASEPA’s General Manager, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, emphasized the agency’s determination to enforce environmental regulations throughout Lagos State. He urged industrial operators to adopt sustainable production methods and install effective pollution control measures to mitigate harmful emissions.
Dr. Ajayi reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting residents from the detrimental effects of industrial pollution. He warned that the agency would continue to take stringent action against facilities that fail to comply with established environmental standards.
He also encouraged industries to strictly adhere to environmental laws, highlighting that such compliance is essential for achieving sustainable industrial growth while safeguarding the health and well-being of residents in Lagos.
