Lagos State to Introduce Special Vehicle Plates for Persons with Disabilities
LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce specialized vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). This initiative aims to enhance inclusivity, improve accessibility, and facilitate better mobility throughout the state.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) in collaboration with the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA). The proposal emerged during a recent courtesy visit by LASODA management to the MVAA, where both agencies explored possible partnerships for implementing a disability-friendly vehicle identification system.
During the meeting, Mr. Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, emphasized the significance of the special number plates as a crucial step toward fulfilling Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of a “Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.” He noted that these plates would enhance recognition and ease of movement for individuals with disabilities.
“This initiative aligns with the principles of inclusive governance. We are committed to supporting this process and anticipate positive outcomes from our collaboration,” Muri-Okunola said.
He also revealed that discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have commenced regarding the proposed plates.
Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, General Manager of LASODA, stated that the meeting aimed to initiate strategic discussions about the number plates tailored for the needs of the disability community. She highlighted that the initiative would extend to all categories of individuals with disabilities and their caregivers, enhancing identification and support within the community.
“Inclusion is not merely a buzzword; it must be reflected in every policy and system. Specialized number plates will significantly aid identification and reinforce our commitment to an inclusive society,” she said.
Oyetunde-Lawal urged stakeholders to embrace the spirit of inclusion, emphasizing the collective responsibility in ensuring that individuals with disabilities are recognized and integrated into all aspects of society.
Both agencies reaffirmed their dedication to advancing the initiative, aligning it with the Lagos State Special People’s Law (LSSPL), which aims to protect the rights of persons with disabilities and promote equal opportunities. They expressed optimism that the new vehicle plates would enhance visibility and the active participation of PWDs in Lagos State.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of commitment from both agencies, attended by directors and senior management staff from both LASODA and the MVAA.
