Lagos Urges Banks, Filling Stations to Open Toilets for Public Use

Lagos State Government Calls on Private Sector to Open Restrooms to the Public
The Lagos State Government is encouraging private businesses, including commercial banks, filling stations, and eateries, to make their restrooms available to the public. This initiative aims to combat open defecation and enhance sanitation throughout the state.
In a statement released on social media Saturday, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, highlighted the need for collaboration between the government and private entities. He noted that more than 1,710 functioning public toilets have already been installed at key locations across Lagos, but emphasized that government efforts alone are insufficient.
Wahab stated, “As part of our sustained efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve public sanitation, we currently have 1,710 functioning public toilets strategically located for residents and visitors.”
He further urged businesses to participate in the initiative by opening their restroom facilities to the public. “This collaborative approach will significantly complement government efforts and expand access to sanitation facilities across the state,” he added.
The Commissioner also reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws, warning that individuals engaging in open defecation could face arrest and prosecution.
“Access to sanitation is a shared responsibility,” Wahab said. “While the government continues to expand infrastructure, residents and businesses must also play their part in ensuring Lagos remains clean, safe, and habitable.”
