Three Arrested for Illegal Waste Disposal in Lagos

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has arrested three individuals for alleged illegal waste disposal during a nighttime enforcement operation in the Ketu-Alapere area.

The arrests were announced in a statement on Sunday from Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, via his verified X account.

The enforcement took place between May 8 and May 9, 2026, as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat indiscriminate waste dumping. The LAWMA Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team conducted the operation to monitor illegal waste activities in the region.

Wahab reported that the suspects were caught in the act of improperly disposing of refuse in unauthorized locations. Following their arrest, investigators traced the suspects to their residences to gather information on the motivations behind their actions and to prevent further environmental violations.

The investigation revealed that the properties linked to the suspects lacked adequate waste storage solutions and were not registered with authorized Private Sector Participants responsible for waste collection. Consequently, all identified properties have been documented and sent to the LAWMA legal department for appropriate action.

In addition, Wahab stated that the operation included clearing designated blackspots in the area to support ongoing efforts to maintain environmental cleanliness.
