MACBAN Calls for Urgent Security Measures Amid Rising Violence in Benue State
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has expressed deep concern regarding the escalating violence and cattle rustling in the Benue South Senatorial District. The organization characterized the situation as evolving from a longstanding farmer-herder conflict into a broader scope of organized criminal activity.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, MACBAN Secretary Ibrahim Galma condemned the ongoing violence and urged the Benue State Government, security agencies, and traditional leaders to take immediate action to halt the bloodshed and restore peace in affected communities.
“We wish to state categorically that the situation in Zone C has transcended a farmer-herder conflict,” Galma said. “What we are witnessing is pure criminality orchestrated by elements exploiting the fragile security situation to perpetrate murder, theft, arson, and forceful displacement of innocent citizens.”
The association pointed to the recent killing of its Benue State Chairman, Ardo Risku Muhammad, and his associate, Yakubu Isah, who were shot by suspected gunmen in Okudu village, Otukpo Local Government Area, on June 26. MACBAN described this incident as a tragic event that has amplified fear and insecurity throughout the district.
The organization highlighted additional violent attacks in the Otukpo-Nobi, Ogobia, and Efeyi communities, where several residents reportedly lost their lives. It extended condolences to the bereaved families, emphasizing that grief transcends ethnic boundaries.
MACBAN also reported that between July 21 and July 28, Fulani herders and their livestock faced attacks in several communities, including Olahimu, Ipom, Ochimosho, Omoloye, Ofiloko, Ibagidi, and Ugene. These incidents allegedly resulted in fatalities, cattle theft, and the displacement of numerous herders. The association noted that several settlements in Otukpo Local Government Area were also damaged in suspected arson attacks.
The association called on security agencies to conduct thorough investigations into these incidents and ensure that those found responsible face prosecution in accordance with the law.
To mitigate the deteriorating security situation, MACBAN proposed the formation of a joint peace and security committee that includes representatives from the Idoma, Igede, Agatu, and Fulani communities. It also advocated for an increased security presence in affected areas, an emergency peace summit for key stakeholders, and diligent investigations into all criminal activities.
Reiterating its commitment to peaceful coexistence, MACBAN urged Fulani communities in Benue State to remain peaceful and seek lawful means to address their grievances.
“The Government must act now to restore normalcy before the situation degenerates beyond control,” Galma emphasized.
