17 Family Members of Suspected Terrorists Surrender in Borno State

Borno State authorities reported that 17 family members associated with the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) have surrendered to troops participating in Operation Hadin Kai.

The surrender was announced on Wednesday by Captain Muhammed Goni, the Acting Military Information Officer for the operation. Goni detailed that 16 individuals surrendered in the Konduga Local Government Area, while one additional member surrendered in Bama Local Government Area.

The individuals are currently in military custody, undergoing initial profiling and debriefing. Goni noted that the decision to surrender was influenced by sustained military pressure on terrorist enclaves in the region.

The first group of 16, which included 10 women and six children, surrendered around 9:15 a.m. on August 4, 2026, during a patrol by the 222 Battalion along the Gezuwa axis in Konduga. According to preliminary reports, the group also had N92,000 in cash, which was recovered during the incident.

Additionally, around 12:04 p.m. on the same day, an 11-year-old JAS family member surrendered to troops from the 202 Battalion in Bama.

The military continues to operate in the northeastern region, exerting pressure on terrorist groups to encourage voluntary surrenders.
