Federal High Court Sentences Man to Death for 2014 Nyanya Bombing

ABUJA—The Federal High Court has sentenced 37-year-old Zakaria Garba to death by hanging for his involvement in the 2014 Nyanya Motor Park bomb attack, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

Justice James Omotosho issued the sentence during a mass trial of terrorism suspects in the Federal Capital Territory. Garba was convicted after pleading guilty to five terrorism-related charges presented by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

The Nyanya bomb blasts, which occurred in April 2014 on the outskirts of Abuja, resulted in the deaths of at least 70 individuals, marking one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in the nation’s capital.

In the ruling, referenced as FHC/KNJ/CR/985/2026, Justice Omotosho noted varying penalties for the defendant across the five counts. Garba received 35 years of imprisonment for counts one and two, life imprisonment for count three, and death by hanging for counts four and five.

The judge stated that Garba’s guilty plea, along with the evidence presented, confirmed his role in the attack, which caused significant loss of life and destruction.

This conviction is part of a larger initiative by authorities to prosecute individuals associated with terrorism and provide some measure of justice for victims affected by such attacks throughout the country.
