May Day tragedy: Many Kwara workers die in motor accident

Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Health Workers in Kwara
ILORIN, Nigeria — Several health workers lost their lives Friday in a road accident on the Oke-Onigbin-Omu Aran highway while returning from the 2026 Workers’ Day rally in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.
The victims were members of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) from the Ekiti Local Government Area. They had participated in the annual May Day celebration at the Kwara State Stadium before the crash occurred.
Though official casualty figures have not been confirmed, eyewitnesses reported that the incident transpired in the evening when one of the vehicles transporting the union members experienced a tire burst, causing the driver to lose control.
Awelewa Olawale Gabriel, the Chairman of the Ekiti Local Government Council, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He characterized the loss as a significant blow not only to the council but also to the health sector and the entire state.
“Our hearts are heavy. These were dedicated professionals who left their homes to celebrate the dignity of labor, only to meet this unfortunate fate on their way back,” he stated.
Gabriel emphasized that the tragic event overshadowed a moment of unity that should characterize the celebration of Nigerian workers. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and the MHWUN community, praying for the deceased and strength for those affected.
“The entire Ekiti Local Government Council stands with the MHWUN family during this difficult time. We pray for the healing of the injured and offer comfort to the bereaved,” he added.
Some union members who survived the accident are currently hospitalized with injuries, and the council chairman expressed hope for their swift recovery.
In light of the tragedy, the Kwara State chapter of MHWUN announced a three-day mourning period, instructing members statewide to lower the union’s flag to half-mast in honor of their deceased colleagues.
Olawale Gabriel also assured that the local government would collaborate with the Kwara State Government and relevant agencies to provide support for affected families and assist with medical expenses for the injured.
At the time of this report, the Federal Road Safety Corps had not yet been reached for additional details regarding the incident.
