Mbah faces 14 challengers in 2027 Enugu governorship race

ENUGU — Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah will compete against 14 other candidates in the upcoming 2027 governorship election, as political parties vie for influence in the region.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) unveiled the list of candidates Monday at its Enugu State headquarters, revealing that all 15 contenders have been cleared to participate in the election.
Mbah, the current governor, is running for re-election under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC). His main challenger is Chief Uchenna Nnaji from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Other notable candidates include Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Chief Obodoeze Ocho of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Edwin Alor is representing Accord, while Prof. Jehu Nnaji is running for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The Labour Party (LP) has nominated Okwudilichukwu Ugwu. Nnamdi Ugwu is contesting on the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) ticket, while Anthony Udeani of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and Afamefuna Ani of the Action Peoples Party (APP) are also in the race.
Additionally, candidates Elvis Ugwoke from the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Friday Iloka from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) will be part of the ballot. The list is completed by Nnamdi Omeje of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Ken Ikeh of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and Chief Obioma Nnamani of the Because Of Our Tomorrow (BOOT) Party.
The presence of 15 candidates signals a highly competitive race ahead. Political engagement among candidates, stakeholders, and community leaders is anticipated to increase as campaigns gain momentum.
Mbah is expected to emphasize his administration’s infrastructure projects and social interventions as key elements of his re-election strategy. His government points to various verifiable initiatives that it claims have positively impacted residents.
However, Mbah will face significant challenges from the diverse opposition vying for control of the state. As the election approaches, the 2027 Enugu governorship contest is set to become an increasingly dynamic and contested affair.
