Former Chelsea player Tony Cascarino has voiced criticism of Argentina captain Lionel Messi regarding the team’s conduct during their World Cup final loss to Spain last weekend.
Argentina suffered a 1-0 defeat in New Jersey, with Ferran Torres scoring the only goal of the match.
Cascarino noted that Spain demonstrated superior play throughout the game. Following the final whistle, tensions flared as some Argentine players confronted their Spanish counterparts, while Messi opted not to engage.
During an appearance on talkSPORT’s The Sports Breakfast, Cascarino expressed disappointment that Messi did not attempt to temper his teammates’ aggression. He acknowledged that physicality is an inherent part of football but believes Argentina’s players showcased a lack of talent against Spain.
“I was a bit disappointed in Lionel Messi, if I’m honest, for not reacting to the way they played,” Cascarino stated. “He’s been the best player I could ever think of. I was surprised that he didn’t say, ‘Hey, look, physicality is part of our game, but we’ve got a lot of talent, and we should have shown a bit more of that.’”
