Miners’ death: Niger NSCDC gets new commandant
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has appointed Abdulhamid Kabara as the new commandant for its Niger State Command, following the recent deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody.
Kabara succeeds Suberu Aniviye, who was suspended from his position after the suspected illegal miners died in Minna, the state capital, on Thursday. The announcement regarding Kabara’s appointment was made by NSCDC spokesperson Abubakar Muti on Saturday.
According to Muti, Kabara officially took command on Friday, September 18.
“The assumption of office comes at a particularly sensitive period for the Command, following the unfortunate deaths of some persons arrested in connection with suspected illegal mining activities in the State,” the statement noted.
In his initial remarks, Kabara expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and conveyed his condolences to the families affected by the incident. He emphasized that the corps remains dedicated to its official duties, which include arrests, investigations, and enforcement against illegal mining. However, he highlighted that the protection of human life must remain a top priority.
“At a moment like this, beyond arrests, investigations, enforcement, and the fight against illegal mining, we must remember one fundamental truth: every human life matters,” Kabara stated.
