NAFDAC Dismantles Illegal Alcohol Production Outlets in Lagos

LAGOS — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down two illegal production facilities involved in the counterfeiting and adulteration of alcoholic beverages in Lagos State.

In a statement released Wednesday on the agency’s official X account, NAFDAC officials conducted separate raids based on credible intelligence, targeting facilities at the Trade Fair Complex and another location on Lagos Island. During these operations, agents recovered more than 1,800 cartons of counterfeit alcoholic products, with an estimated value of ₦350 million.

According to the statement, enforcement operatives found makeshift production setups at the Trade Fair Complex, including plastic mixing tanks, improvised filtration systems, empty branded bottles, corks, and packaging materials intended for fake alcoholic beverages.

The agency also reported a related operation on Lagos Island that resulted in the arrest of a suspect linked to the production and distribution of counterfeit drinks through a retail outlet. All recovered items were seized and are undergoing further regulatory action.

NAFDAC cautions that the consumption of adulterated alcoholic beverages can lead to serious health risks, including poisoning, organ damage, and even death. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting offenders and encouraged the public to purchase products only from authorized outlets.

NAFDAC urges individuals to report any suspicious activities to the nearest office or through its toll-free line, 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322).
