NANS Backs NDLEA Anti-Drug War in Nigerian School

NANS Backs NDLEA’s Efforts to Combat Drug Abuse in Schools
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reaffirmed its support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the campaign against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in educational institutions.
In a statement released Wednesday, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi highlighted the partnership between NANS and the agency, emphasizing their shared commitment to address drug-related issues on Nigerian campuses.
During a recent visit to NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd.), in Abuja, NANS National President Comrade Sola Oladoja expressed the union’s dedication to this ongoing initiative.
The statement indicated that during the meeting at the agency’s headquarters, NANS leadership reiterated their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. They commended Marwa for his ongoing successes in combating drug cartels and safeguarding the well-being of Nigerian students through the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative.
“During the visit, Oladoja praised Marwa’s dynamic leadership and the agency’s achievements against drug cartels. He specifically noted the importance of the WADA initiative in raising awareness across higher education institutions,” the statement read.
Furthermore, Oladoja emphasized that the association’s support for the NDLEA and the Renewed Hope Agenda stems from the government’s tangible accomplishments benefiting youth, including the implementation of student loans, the resolution of industrial actions in tertiary institutions, and various empowerment programs.
In response, Marwa acknowledged his strong connection with the Nigerian student body, commending their continued support during his national assignments. He expressed satisfaction with their acknowledgment of the administration’s achievements.
“As a critical sector of the Nigerian polity, your appreciation for the gains of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and your commitment to support his re-election in 2027 brings me joy,” Marwa stated.
Addressing the issue of drug prevalence in schools, Marwa underscored the necessity of collaborative efforts to cleanse the academic environment. He urged for a united front to combat the health risks associated with drug abuse, which he noted can impact students, their families, and society as a whole.
Marwa also discussed the recently introduced Federal Government Drug Integrity Test Policy for students, characterizing it as protective rather than punitive. He explained that early detection of drug use can significantly enhance treatment and rehabilitation efforts aimed at youth.
