NDLEA Destroys Illicit Drugs Valued at N2.8 Billion in Edo State

EDO, Nigeria — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the destruction of 73,463.21 kilograms of illicit drugs in Edo State, valued at approximately N2.8 billion. The incineration took place on June 11, 2026, at Idogbo in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.

The event was led by NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa, alongside representatives from the Edo State Government and various security agencies.

Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the Commander of the Edo State Command, stated that the destruction of the drugs complied with a Federal High Court order issued in Benin City. The haul included 73,210.23 kilograms of Cannabis sativa and 246.36 kilograms of various psychotropic substances, such as Tramadol, Diazepam, and Codeine cough syrup.

Ofoyeju reported that the command had made significant operational gains, including intercepting vehicles transporting drugs, identifying illicit drug farms, and locating hidden drug caches. He emphasized the risks faced by operatives, noting their encounters with armed individuals while performing their duties.

“This destruction signifies the outcomes of relentless, intelligence-driven operations,” Ofoyeju remarked. He added that safeguarding the youth from drug abuse is crucial, stating, “If we fail to protect them from drug and substance abuse, we have indeed given them nothing.”

Brig. Gen. Marwa, represented by Deputy Commander-General of Narcotics Ahmed Suleiman Ningi, reinforced the NDLEA’s commitment to combating drug abuse and thanked the Edo State administration for its support. He highlighted the allocation of land for a new State Command Headquarters, linking infrastructure investments to effective drug enforcement.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, represented by Mrs. Edesili Anani, emphasized that the fight against drugs is integral to curbing criminal activities and improving public health. He announced plans for a modern rehabilitation center for individuals recovering from substance use disorders and warned drug traffickers to leave Edo State.

Senator Joseph Ikpea, Chair of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, acknowledged the NDLEA’s efforts in combating drug trafficking and pledged legislative support for enhanced funding and resources.

As the ceremony concluded, officials reiterated the importance of a united effort in tackling drug-related challenges facing the nation.
