Nigeria on high alert as FG moves to block Ebola entry

Federal Ministry of Interior Announces Enhanced Measures Against Ebola Virus in Nigeria

LAGOS—The Federal Ministry of Interior announced new measures to bolster Nigeria’s preparedness against the Ebola virus disease, despite the absence of confirmed cases in the country.

This decision was revealed in a statement from Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following a high-level meeting held in Lagos at the direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The meeting was led by Femi Gbajabiamila and included representatives from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, security agencies, and health authorities. Participants assessed the nation’s readiness and discussed strategies to enhance preventive measures against potential Ebola outbreaks.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Interior is prioritizing stricter border control and screening protocols at airports, seaports, and land borders to mitigate any risks of an outbreak.

“While there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, we are not leaving anything to chance,” the statement emphasized.

The minister further noted that the government is collaborating with the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, and other relevant agencies to improve monitoring and surveillance at all entry points into the country.
