Federal Government Expresses Condolences Following Death of Suspected Illegal Miners in Niger
The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound sorrow over the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Niger State.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, conveyed the government’s condolences to Niger State Governor Umaru Bago and extended sympathies to the traditional leadership and the families of the deceased.
In a statement released on Friday by his Media Aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, Idris emphasized the government’s shared grief over the incident, which he described as a tragic event. He reiterated that safeguarding the lives, dignity, and fundamental rights of all Nigerians is a critical responsibility of the government.
Idris stressed the need for a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the deaths. He noted that immediate actions have been initiated to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
As part of the response, Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has suspended the commandant of the NSCDC in Niger, Suberu Aniviye, and has directed a comprehensive investigation into the matter. Idris characterized this action as a reflection of the seriousness with which the government is treating the situation.
“The swift action taken by the Minister of Interior underscores the seriousness with which the Federal Government views this matter,” Idris said. He assured the public that the investigation will seek to uncover the circumstances of the incident and that appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining and other unlawful activities that pose risks to national security and the environment. He also noted that all enforcement operations must respect legal standards and uphold human rights.
Idris stated that there would be no attempts to shield individuals found responsible for the incident but cautioned against prejudging the investigation’s outcome. He called for calm in Wushishi and throughout Niger State, urging the community to allow the investigation to proceed without interference.
The Federal Government has pledged to ensure justice for the affected families and the community, emphasizing its commitment to thoroughly establishing the facts surrounding this tragedy.
