Nigerian returnee recounts how kidnapping ordeals force family into tricycle business

Nigerian Family Grapples with Consequences of Kidnappings

A Nigerian man returning from abroad has faced significant financial turmoil following a series of kidnapping incidents involving his family, ultimately leading him to restart his career as a commercial tricycle operator.

Chinenye Glory, the wife of the returnee, shared her husband’s ordeal in a recent Facebook statement. He returned to Nigeria in 2019 for a family visit but was subsequently kidnapped that same year. After a substantial ransom was paid, he was released, a situation that disrupted his plans to return abroad.

Shortly after his release, the man’s elder brother was abducted by suspected kidnappers, who demanded another ransom. The man sold his possessions to secure his brother’s release, motivated by concerns for his brother’s young children and wife. Despite the ransom payment, the brother was reportedly killed, and the family was unable to recover his body. This tragedy left the family in dire financial straits.

Chinenye stated that while the family’s debts were ultimately settled, they were left with minimal resources for daily living. In an effort to rebuild their lives, the man borrowed to purchase a second-hand commercial tricycle, commonly known as a Keke, which he now operates.

Recently, the tricycle has developed mechanical issues, exacerbating the family’s financial difficulties.

The family has since appealed for assistance, noting that the series of kidnappings has drastically altered their situation, forcing them from a comfortable lifestyle into a daily struggle for survival.
