Normalcy returns to Benue after deadly cult clash

Makurdi Residents Seek Normalcy After Violent Outbreak Linked to Rival Cults

Residents of Awe Street in Makurdi are gradually working to restore a sense of normalcy following a violent incident attributed to rival cult groups over the weekend.

On-site reports observed a significant deployment of security personnel, including members of the police, military, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) patrolling the area. Local residents noted that this heightened security presence has been instrumental in re-establishing calm.

A shop owner, who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, expressed relief, stating, “We are happy now. Peace has returned, and businesses are opening again.”

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the violence erupted in the early hours of Saturday amid escalating tensions related to a prior killing. One source shared, “Everything was normal that night before we started hearing gunshots. We already feared something like this could happen.”

Residents reported a death toll of at least four individuals, including one who succumbed to injuries sustained during the chaos, while two others were reported injured.

Security forces reportedly intensified operations starting Sunday morning, conducting continuous patrols both day and night.

As of this report, businesses along Awe Street have reopened, and community movement has resumed. However, attempts to reach the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, for confirmation of the incident were unsuccessful as calls went unanswered.
