Northern Nigeria dead, Imams, priests not available for burial, standing mandate – Shehu

Public Commentator Calls Northern Nigeria a ‘Land of the Living Dead’
In a striking assessment of the ongoing challenges in Northern Nigeria, commentator Mahdi Shehu described the region as a “land of the living dead.” His remarks, made Saturday on his official X account, raise serious concerns about the current state of the population.
Shehu painted a bleak picture, stating that while many residents are physically alive, they are unable to effectively confront the myriad difficulties facing them. According to him, widespread fear and confusion, fueled by rampant insecurity and economic hardship, have rendered individuals incapable of responding to their circumstances.
“The current inhabitants of Northern Nigeria are alive but dead,” he stated, echoing the sentiment that trauma and fear have stifled the ability of citizens to advocate for change.
He criticized the regional leadership, pointing to a lack of credible direction and accountability among those in power. Shehu attributed this to both compromised elites and ineffective traditional institutions that have failed to safeguard the population and provide necessary guidance.
In his commentary, Shehu characterized the citizenry as passive, contributing to the deteriorating situation. “They are spineless, visionless, planless, and have been reduced to a priceless laughing stock,” he wrote, emphasizing that these issues stem from a leadership crisis, a lack of accountability among elites, and an environment of envy and greed.
Concluding his statement with a somber note, Shehu lamented the current conditions in the region, saying, “RIP NORTHERN NIGERIA,” while noting that spiritual leaders are often unavailable to provide support, as many remain preoccupied with their mandates.
