Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau Launches Probe into Bonny Anchorage Collision

By Efe Onodjae

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into the collision involving the container vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso and the oil tanker MT Lady Martina at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State. The incident, which took place on May 20, 2026, has been classified by the bureau as a “Very Serious Marine Casualty.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, NSIB Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, confirmed that the bureau activated its marine occurrence response protocols immediately upon receiving notification of the incident.

An investigative team was deployed to Onne and Bonny on May 22 to begin evidence preservation and preliminary investigative activities. The team boarded both vessels to collect critical evidence, which included detailed interviews with the captains and key crew members. Relevant operational records and navigational data were also secured, according to the statement.

NSIB reported that data from the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) and Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) of MV Maersk Valparaiso has been successfully extracted for forensic and navigational analysis.

In compliance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Casualty Investigation Code and related obligations, NSIB has formally informed the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) of Singapore, as a substantially interested state. Collaborative efforts with relevant local and international stakeholders have already commenced.

The bureau assured the public and maritime stakeholders that the investigation would be conducted with professionalism and independence. The primary objective is to establish the causal and contributory factors behind the incident while enhancing maritime safety standards.

NSIB cautioned against speculation regarding the causes of the collision, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing. “It would be premature to speculate on the probable causes at this stage. The Bureau therefore strongly urges the public and all stakeholders to refrain from speculation while the investigative process continues,” the statement read.

The agency further noted that should any urgent safety concerns emerge during the investigation, immediate safety recommendations would be issued to avert similar incidents in the future.

A final investigation report will be made public upon completion of the investigation, in accordance with national regulations and international obligations.
