Nwoko wants Anioma State for South-East – Okowa

Okowa Critiques Nwoko’s Vision for Anioma State

Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has criticized Senator Ned Nwoko’s proposals regarding the establishment of Anioma State, alleging that Nwoko seeks to reassign Anioma to the South-East and remove Asaba as the capital.
During a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Oshimili South Local Government Area, Okowa asserted that residents of Delta North favor the creation of Anioma State as part of the South-South geopolitical zone, rather than as an extension of the South-East.
“There have been many misconceptions and misrepresentations in the media concerning Anioma State,” Okowa said. “I believe there is no one from Anioma who opposes its creation. The Anioma we seek must encompass the nine local governments, with Asaba as the headquarters.”
Targeting Nwoko, whom he aims to unseat in the upcoming 2027 Delta North Senate race, Okowa stated, “An Asaba daughter fought for us, and today we have Asaba as our state capital. Someone who doesn’t understand this history now wants to undermine that status. It’s a misguided approach that shows a lack of common sense.”
Okowa further criticized Nwoko for pursuing the Anioma state initiative as a solitary effort, suggesting a lack of meaningful consultation with local stakeholders.
“It is important to engage with your community,” he noted. “One must be in touch with the majority opinion. Believing you know everything can lead you astray.”
He added, “We are approaching a critical juncture in the legislative process. Claims about state creation can be misleading. We want to pursue the objective of Anioma State, but it must reflect the collective decision of our people.”
Okowa emphasized that the future of Anioma State should result from a united effort among residents and state leaders.
