Ogun Assembly moves to strengthen judiciary, Rural roads as two bills scale second reading

The Ogun State House of Assembly commenced discussions Thursday on two bills designed to enhance the state’s judiciary and improve the management of rural roads.

During a plenary session led by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide, the bills underwent their second reading. The measures included the “Ogun State Judicial Institute Bill, 2026,” and the “Ogun State Rural Access Roads Agency (Amendment) Bill, 2026.” Both bills are intended to strengthen institutional frameworks and improve service delivery within their respective sectors.

Oluseun Adesanya, the sponsor of the Judicial Institute Bill, urged fellow lawmakers to support its swift passage. He noted that the proposed legislation aims to establish a professional training institution for judiciary staff. If approved and signed into law by Governor Dapo Abiodun, the bill would create a legal framework to regulate the institution’s operations and outline its administrative structure.

Adesanya emphasized that the bill would promote greater professionalism and efficiency within the judiciary.

Babatunde Tella, who sponsored the amendment to the Rural Access Roads Agency Bill, also addressed the assembly. He highlighted the need to revise the existing law that governs the agency, particularly concerning the Director General’s remuneration, which he claimed was omitted in the current legislation. Tella stated that the amendment is essential to address this oversight and enhance the agency’s operational framework.

Following deliberations on both bills, Speaker Elemide assigned the Judicial Institute Bill to the House Committee on Justice, Ethics and Public Petitions. The Rural Access Roads Agency Amendment Bill was referred to the House Committee on Water Resources, Energy, and Rural Development for further legislative review.

In other news, Elemide announced that Waliu Owode, who represents the Ijebu East state constituency, has returned to the People’s Democratic Party, making him the only minority member in the House.
