Imo Lawmaker Calls for Improved Fire Response Following Market Blaze
OKIGWE, Imo State—Samuel Chidiebere Ogbunikpa, a member of the Imo State House of Assembly representing Okigwe Constituency, has urged Governor Hope Uzodinma to enhance the capabilities of the state fire service in light of a recent fire incident that devastated Eke Okigwe Market.
During a session of the Assembly, Ogbunikpa presented a motion concerning the fire outbreak, which he described as catastrophic, leading to significant loss of property and leaving shop owners in shock.
Ogbunikpa called for immediate government action to prevent future occurrences and to provide assistance to those affected. He emphasized the need for essential resources, including water boreholes for firefighting and fire-trucks, as well as the establishment of functional fire stations in the area.
Additionally, he highlighted the poor condition of the Okigwe Fire Station, advocating for renovations and the allocation of modern equipment to improve emergency response. He also suggested that the state government consider compensating traders who suffered losses due to the fire.
The motion received support from other Assembly members, who echoed the call for the state to aid victims of the fire.
