One killed, three injured as gunman opens fire at marriage ceremony in Kano

One person was killed and three others were injured in a shooting that occurred during a marriage ceremony in Kano State on August 16.

The incident, which took place in Tudun Yola, has been confirmed by the Kano State Police Command. Public Relations Officer CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa stated that a 34-year-old suspect, identified as Rabiu Mukhtar, has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

According to Haruna-Kiyawa, Mukhtar allegedly fired a pump-action gun at four individuals, resulting in injuries. The weapon was recovered from the suspect’s possession.

The victims have been identified as Sadiq Abubakar, Umar Rabiu, Muhammad Sadisu, and Aliyu Mustapha. They were transported to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for medical attention, where Aliyu Mustapha later succumbed to his injuries. The other three victims are reportedly responding to treatment.

Haruna-Kiyawa indicated that Mukhtar, along with another individual, has been taken into custody at the command headquarters in Bompai for further investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the shooting was sparked by objections to the music being played at the event. Mukhtar allegedly claimed he fired after being alerted to the presence of local groups known as “Yan Daba” approaching the venue.

The police spokesperson assured that the suspects will face prosecution once the investigation is complete.
