Peace meeting turns deadly in Plateau as one person killed, five injured

Pankshin Community Meeting Erupts in Violence, Resulting in One Death
PANKSHIN, Plateau State — A peace meeting aimed at fostering dialogue between local residents and members of the Fulani community in the Pankshin Local Government Area escalated into violence on Thursday, claiming one life and injuring five others. The incident unfolded after a group of youths reportedly attempted to seize weapons from soldiers assigned to provide security at the event.
According to security sources, the meeting took place around 3 p.m. in Mier village. Troops from Sector 8 of Operation Enduring Peace had organized the gathering to alleviate tensions stemming from a series of communal clashes, cattle rustling incidents, and a deepening mistrust between farming and herding communities in Plateau State.
Initial reports indicated that the engagement was proceeding peacefully until several aggrieved youths allegedly confronted the soldiers. “The situation turned violent when some youths approached the troops aggressively, attempting to disarm two soldiers,” a security source stated.
In the ensuing struggle, one soldier fired his weapon in self-defense, leading to a chaotic scene. One resident succumbed to injuries sustained during the altercation, while four other civilians and one soldier were also hurt.
The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for medical care, and the deceased individual was taken to the General Hospital morgue in Pankshin.
In the aftermath of the incident, additional security personnel were deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further conflict. Efforts to de-escalate tensions among community members were also initiated.
Authorities confirmed the arrest of four youths suspected of initiating the violence against the soldiers.
This incident highlights ongoing security challenges and repeated communal clashes in Plateau State. Troops from Operation Enduring Peace continue to conduct patrols, engage in peace talks, and carry out intelligence operations to combat banditry and maintain stability in the region.
Military officials and community leaders are urging residents to refrain from taking matters into their own hands and to work cooperatively with security agencies to ensure peace in the state.
