New Prime Minister Peter Magyar Sworn in as Hungary Faces Transition
Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, was officially sworn in on May 9, 2026, following a decisive victory in last month’s parliamentary elections. Magyar, 45, leader of the center-right Tisza party, succeeded Viktor Orban, whose lengthy tenure of 16 years came to an end amid widespread calls for change.
Magyar’s election campaign focused on addressing economic stagnation and rebuilding strained relationships with Hungary’s key allies. In his inaugural address, he called on citizens to “step through the gate of regime change,” highlighting his commitment to transforming the political landscape.
The Tisza party secured a commanding majority in the National Assembly, winning 141 of the 199 available seats.
