ABUJA — Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, arrived at the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday for the party’s presidential screening ahead of the 2027 general election.

The former governor of Anambra State, considered a leading contender for the party’s nomination, arrived around 6:45 p.m., wearing a traditional black kaftan and cap. He was accompanied by Senator Victor Umeh of Anambra Central.

Upon his arrival, Obi submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms through an aide. This submission coincided with the entrance of Sam Egwu, chairman of the screening committee.

In recent days, speculation surrounding Obi as a potential consensus candidate has grown, particularly following the NDC’s decision to suspend the sale of presidential nomination forms while extending deadlines for other electoral positions. Although both Obi’s representatives and party leadership have dismissed the notion of a consensus arrangement, interest in his candidacy continues to intensify.

The NDC has established a 17-member screening committee tasked with overseeing the evaluation of aspirants for various offices in advance of the 2027 elections.
