Search Efforts Underway for Missing Persons Following Catastrophic Floods in Nepal

Rescue teams are actively searching for hundreds of individuals missing along the Nepal-China border following a devastating flood triggered by a glacier collapse. The incident, which occurred on August 26, has resulted in at least 270 confirmed deaths and over 1,300 missing individuals, including foreign nationals and pilgrims, according to local authorities.
The disaster has displaced hundreds throughout the Himalayan region, complicating rescue efforts. Nepali officials report that the destruction of numerous bridges and significant damage to nearly 40 kilometers (25 miles) of roads have hindered the operations.
Brigadier General Raja Ram Basnet of the Nepali army stated that rescue helicopters have successfully airlifted more than 100 people from affected areas as of Thursday. This operation included the evacuation of at least eight foreign nationals to the capital, Kathmandu. Teams have also rescued individuals trapped in facilities linked to the Trishuli hydropower project.
Rescue workers discovered bodies as far as 100 kilometers (60 miles) downstream in Chitwan district. Many injured individuals have been transported to Kathmandu for advanced medical treatment.
As the focus shifts from search and rescue to extensive relief operations, Bishal Kumar Bhandari, chairperson of the Nepal Red Cross Society, reported that approximately 1,200 people have been displaced from at least three villages.
In Tibet, a mudslide near the Gyirong border crossing significantly impacted the area, leaving surrounding regions buried under an average of 1.5 meters (5 feet) of mud, with some road sections exceeding 2 meters (6 feet) deep, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
