Police begins enforcement of mandatory reflective jackets for commercial motorcyclists in Kogi

Kogi State Police to Enforce Mandatory Safety Gear for Motorcyclists
Lokoja, Nigeria — The Kogi State Police Command has announced new measures to enhance the security and accountability of commercial motorcyclists across the state. Beginning July 1, 2026, all commercial riders will be required to wear reflective jackets featuring unique serial numbers and to carry valid identification cards while on duty.
Police Public Relations Officer ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat revealed this information in a statement issued from Lokoja. The initiative is designed to address ongoing security challenges and improve the traceability of commercial motorcycle operators within the state.
In the statement, Afusat explained that the reflective jackets will be color-coded according to the state’s three senatorial districts. Riders in Kogi Central will don yellow jackets, those in Kogi West will wear blue, and operators in Kogi East will be assigned red jackets.
Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi has instructed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to enforce the new directive rigorously, while ensuring the rights of citizens are respected.
Kankarofi emphasized that any acts of extortion or harassment directed at commercial motorcyclists by police personnel during enforcement would not be tolerated.
The command warned that riders failing to comply with the directive will face arrest, and their motorcycles will be impounded until all requirements are met. It encouraged members of the public to take note of the serial numbers and identification of the motorcyclists they engage with, as this information can assist security agencies in their investigations.
The police command urged commercial motorcyclists and stakeholders to cooperate fully with the enforcement of this directive.
