Police dismiss old video alleging bandits attack in Imo

Imo State Police Denounce Viral Video of Alleged Bandit Attack
The Imo State Police Command has dismissed a viral video that claims bandits attacked several communities in the state, emphasizing the importance of verifying information before sharing.
In a statement released by Police Spokesperson Henry Okoye, the Command expressed concern over the video, labeling it as outdated footage disseminated by individuals with malicious intent. It described the content as false and misleading, stating it was designed to incite fear and panic among residents.
According to the police, the video is an old recording of an attack that occurred on July 25, 2025, in the Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno communities within the Arondizuogu area of Ideato North Local Government. The incident involved unknown gunmen, identified by the police as led by an individual known as Ifeanyi Okenta, also referred to as “Gentle the Yahoo.” The attack resulted in fatalities and is not indicative of any recent events.
In response to the prior incident, the Imo State Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, conducted intelligence-driven operations that led to the arrest and prosecution of several suspects. Some members of the group were reportedly neutralized during exchanges of gunfire with law enforcement.
Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso urged the public to disregard the circulating false video and to refrain from sharing unverified information that could provoke fear and disrupt public order. He issued a warning to those who create or disseminate false security claims, stating that they would be identified, arrested, and prosecuted under the law.
Bosso reaffirmed the Command’s dedication, alongside other security agencies, to ensuring the safety of lives and property in Imo State. He encouraged residents to remain vigilant, seek information from official sources, and promptly report any suspicious activities to local police.
