Presidency Blames Contractors for Benin-Agbor-Asaba Expressway Issues
The Presidency has attributed the ongoing poor condition of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba Expressway to the contractors responsible for the current work on the roadway. This comes amid reports of commuters being stranded for several days.
On Wednesday, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, addressed the situation during a segment on Channels Television. He indicated that the delays and disrepair are the result of the contractors’ failure to meet their obligations.
Dare stated that the Federal Government has acted quickly in response to public concerns by deploying relevant stakeholders to the affected area and pressing for immediate corrective actions from the contractor.
The Special Adviser emphasized that this incident should not be viewed as a reflection of all road projects managed by the Federal Government. He pointed out that many federal roads are either completed or progressing without similar issues.
Dare underscored the government’s responsibility to identify roads needing repairs and to allocate necessary funding. However, he stressed that contractors must also fulfill their duties effectively.
“These are isolated cases,” he said. “We all know that during the rainy season, road construction can present challenges.”
He also noted that, despite the contractor’s explanations following the incident, it ultimately highlighted their shortcomings.
Dare’s comments followed a visit by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who inspected the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road on Tuesday. Umahi apologized to commuters for the ongoing difficulties related to the roadway.
