PSG forced to move opening league match as heatwave in France damages pitch | Football News

Paris Saint-Germain Moves Opening League Game to Rennes Due to Pitch Damage

Paris Saint-Germain’s first match of the new Ligue 1 season has been relocated to Rennes after extreme summer heat caused significant damage to the pitch at Parc des Princes.

The match, originally scheduled for Sunday, will now take place in Rennes, as announced by the French football competitions committee on Wednesday.

PSG reported that the condition of its home pitch had deteriorated to a level that would not permit the game to proceed “under satisfactory circumstances,” particularly concerning player safety and physical well-being.

The club stated that the decision to move the game was made in collaboration with Rennes, expressing gratitude to its opponent for facilitating the change. PSG acknowledged the inconvenience this may cause for fans planning to attend the match at Parc des Princes and expressed regret over the situation.

Additionally, PSG has indicated that a solution to replace the damaged pitch has been identified, with plans in place to have a new surface ready for its next home match against Monaco on September 4.

The defending champions began their season on a high note, having secured a victory over Aston Villa in Austria to retain their UEFA Super Cup title last Wednesday.
