Residents demand justice after death of 17-year-old in Benue

Outrage in Benue State Following Death of 17-Year-Old
The death of a 17-year-old boy, identified as Sesugh, has provoked significant anger among residents of Benue State, prompting activists to criticize the police for their handling of the situation.
Ukan Kurugh, a social commentator, accused law enforcement of distorting the facts surrounding the incident. In a statement released online, he alleged that Sesugh was killed “in broad daylight” and in view of witnesses. Kurugh expressed concern for the victim’s family, stating they are suffering further due to what he called misleading narratives and attempts to conceal the truth.
“The focus should be on justice, not propaganda,” Kurugh asserted. He accused the Benue State Police Command’s spokesperson of prioritizing public relations over accountability, emphasizing the pain endured by the boy’s family.
Amid ongoing public outcry, Kurugh claimed that authorities are shielding influential individuals, while ordinary citizens continue to face adverse consequences. He insisted that no official narrative could suppress the call for justice, stating, “the voice of innocent blood cannot be silenced.”
The incident has sparked demands for an independent investigation into the events leading to the teenager’s death. Local residents voiced their concerns, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability.
Previously, the Benue State Police Command reported that three suspects—James Onuh, Atser Sesugh, and Solomon Aondoakura Orhena—were apprehended by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Makurdi on April 28, 2026, on allegations of fraud and cybercrime. The police indicated that the suspects escaped custody at the EFCC facility in Makurdi on May 4, 2026, before going into hiding.
Kurugh reiterated his call for justice, warning that “all evil has an expiry date and time.”
