Boko Haram terrorists ambush APC guber candidate’s convoy in Borno
A convoy led by Mustapha Gubio, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, was attacked by suspected Boko Haram militants on Thursday. The incident occurred along the Gubio-Karote-Damasak highway in the northern region of the state.
Gubio and his campaign team were en route to Mobbar, the headquarters of the Damasak Local Government Area, to express thanks to party supporters after being named the APC’s consensus candidate in a recent primary election.
The convoy reportedly came under heavy fire near the Kareto community around 2:30 p.m. Attackers fired multiple rocket-propelled grenades and engaged in sporadic gunfire against the convoy.
However, the assault was repelled by a combined force of security personnel, including soldiers, police officers, personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, agents from the Department of State Services, Civilian Joint Task Force members, and local vigilantes.
An eyewitness who escaped the attack described the situation as terrifying, noting that the convoy faced significant hostility from the attackers. Though some police armored vehicles sustained damage, no casualties were reported.
Force Public Relations Officer Ani Iniedu confirmed the attack in a statement, noting that police tactical units engaged the militants who used an improvised explosive device and rocket-propelled grenades against the convoy. The tactical team successfully drove the attackers back into nearby bush areas and conducted sweeps to mitigate any further explosive threats.
Iniedu added that the convoy, which included the APC candidate, government officials, and other political figures, was safely escorted to a secure location, with no members of the entourage injured or killed during the incident.
